Modern Warfare 2: First Impressions

Well, it’s finally here. The ‘blockbuster’ shooter from Infinity Ward, that, despite all the bullshit that was revealed concerning the PC edition, I still got at midnight this morning.

I beat the campaign in four hours and thirty two minutes.

Still reading? Good. The game is definitely worth your time, even if the campaign is short. When Modern Warfare first came out, I thought the campaign was amazing. Full of ‘holy shit’ moments and cool little weapons to play with. The sequel took the dial to eleven.

I’ll be writing a full review in the near future, after I’ve gotten some multiplayer under my belt, and taken a few screenshots. For now, I’m just going to tell you some of the initial, fresh out of the box impressions.

Infinity Ward did a damn good job with the campaign. It’s filled with tension, intense action, and fantastic scripted sequences. It takes you to a number of different locales, and gives you a boat-load of toys to play with, all with various attachments and trinkets. There’s sneaking sniper missions, like the one in Modern Warfare, there’s intense chase sequences, and naturally, fast run-n-gun scenarios.

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the sheer number of weapons as well as the diversity. While some of the die hard staples remain, some of them didn’t make the cut, or are there but in a different form. For instance, the classic MP5 is nowhere to be found in the campaign, but it’s little brother the MP5K is. You won’t miss it too much, though, as there’s plenty of new toys to play with.

I was, however, very disappointed when I ran over the prompt that said ‘Mouse 4 to pick up Akimbo Desert Eagles’. Yes. I knew they were in the game, and yes, they look absolutely ridiculous. I’m tired of Desert Eagle pistols in games in general, but I’m sure someone will enjoy it. Also present are akimbo SMGs of various varieties and akimbo sawed off shotguns. They’re not that great, but I was surprised to see those, to say the least.

The maps are nice and varied, giving you a nice assortment of playgrounds to romp through, and since I don’t really want to spoil too much, I’ll just say that you will be running through some familiar territory, and it won’t look like you’re used to seeing it.

Sound is A-plus, naturally, as are the voices. Infinity Ward rarely ceases to please when it comes to the auditory, so this shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise.

Through the campaign, you’ll have lots of hectic and amazing moments, and you’ll even run into some familiar faces along the way. Play through it, you’ll definitely enjoy it if you liked the first Modern Warfare. Modern Warfare 2 definitely delivers its promise to be bigger and badder than the first in a big way, and it’s a cinematic shooter experience that doesn’t let up.

I’m interested in what you think of the multiplayer on PC… I’m no overzealous fanboy but it did seem like IW went out of their way to give PC gamers a giant bitchslap.
